iPod on the Outside, Linux on the Inside
Mini, nano, or classic: No matter what the flavor, iPods are bestsellers. Many love the design Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) portable music players while others swear by the simple controls. The database system , which prevents any software but iTunes from stocking the player, is not to everyone's taste, however. Adventurous types can try their luck with alternative software. They allow for individualization of the player and the installation of additional applications. .
Mail Bag Column
DON'T KNOCK QUEBEC As a francophone from Quebec, I believe the issue with Eric Lindros is not only that he refused to play for the Nordiques but also his selfishness (Mail Bag, Nov. 15). Don't mix up the whole political issues with Saku Koivu and hockey. The French issue was made by politicians, not citizens. Facts about Lindros: In 1989 at age 16, he was drafted by Sault Ste. Marie but refused to report. Why? Bebe Lindros said it was too far from Toronto and it would be damaging for his education. In 1991 he was drafted by Les Nordiques and refused to wear the jersey. Why? The Nords were not a good team and he would have to speak French. He returned to junior. Maybe if he would have worn the jersey and sucked it up, he would have won a Stanley Cup with the Avalanche! JULIA BRUNET (The Big E gets an F) BACKUP BROADCASTERS .
Alleged photo of v1.1.2 jailbreak surfaces
A photo surfaced today suggesting that a 'jailbreak' was already developed for Apple's new iPod touch firmware even before its official release yesterday. Apple on Thursday released its iPhone and iPod touch v1.1.2 update, bringing additional language support alongside several other features/fixes. The previous update from Apple, v1.1.1, essentially 'bricked' -- or rendered useless -- most hacked iPhones that made use of 'unlocking' techniques to make use of non-AT&T cellular service. Hackers flocked to the iPhone after the device launched in late June, developing clever ways to bypass the handset's built-in security to install third-party applications. [corrected] TUAW reports that a hacker by the name of 'planetbeing' supplied the photo which appears to show an updated and jailbroken iPod touch.
Zune 80 edging out iPod classic in reviews
Early reviews of Microsoft's imminent Zune 80 are giving it an overall higher score than Apple's iPod classic, according to their respective sources. Reviews from mainstream sites such as CNET, PC Magazine, PCWorld, and YahooTech all note that the hard disk-based version of the player appears to have addressed most of the complaints about the device, which centered around its size and lack of podcasting support, while continuing to sport features Apple-made players lack. The 3.2-inch screen, FM radio, and access to an unlimited music subscription service all beat the iPod classic, according to the reviews; Wi-Fi sharing and sync are not even available on the iPhone or iPod touch, according to YahooTech. "Simply put, Apple is no longer the leader in the realm of hard drive-based players," says PC Magazine reviewer Tim Gideon.
