On The Store Front: The Apple Store

Daunted by downloading? Worried by WiFi? The Apple Store may be able to help with free computer workshops or one-on-one training. The addition to the Outdoor Shops at Lehigh Valley Mall offers a non-intimidating, try-before-you-buy learning environment for new users, and a computing and entertainment mecca for seasoned tech-heads.

First impression: Stylized, high-tech appearance. The uninitiated may feel like Dorothy walking down that long hallway to see the Wizard of Oz.

Who shops here: Grandparents to grandchildren are seen happily tapping and scrolling away, ear buds in place.

Book 2.0 comes with batteries included

Amazon.com changed the way the world buys its books and now it wants to change the way the world reads them.

The US-based web retailer has launched a new wireless $US399 ($450) electronic book reader dubbed the Kindle, a name intended to evoke a sense of igniting knowledge.

The device is the latest attempt in a decade-long quest to deliver an electronic consumer gadget that will allow users to download, store and read digital books.

And the always-connected technology opens up a new range of opportunities for authors and publishers to experiment with electronic books, or e-books.

Comparisons are already being made between Kindle and Apple's iPod digital music player. Launched in 2001 at the same $US399 price, the iPod has gone on to radically change the music industry.

Dylan is our Prince Charming

WITH his cheeky grin and engaging personality, Dylan Bonnar has no trouble charming everyone he meets.

He bounces into a room and in no time at all has everyone in fits of laughter.

His mum, Elaine, 36, says Dylan wants to be a comedian when he grows up and he certainly seems to be heading in that direction.

To gran Caroline Callander, Dylan has proved himself to be more than just a loveable grandson because he has used his caring nature and good sense of humour to keep her going through difficult times.

Caroline, 54, who lives in Patrick Street, Greenock, said: When my depression was at its worst, I watched him while his mum, my daughter, had to work.

When I went to his house early in the morning I did not want to even get out of bed, but I had to go down to watch him.

Hellmuth Promoted at NBA Entertainment

Steve Hellmuth was promoted to executive vice president of operations and technology for NBA Entertainment, the National Basketball Association announced Monday.

Hellmuth, a former NBC producer who is serving his second stint with the NBA, most recently served as senior VP of operations and technology for NBAE. He will continue to be responsible for the league’s information-technology, broadcast-operations and engineering departments and its online efforts at NBA.com.

Hellmuth, who led the NBA’s experiments with 3-D technology for the All-Star Game and NBA Finals last season, will also work with NBA teams to incorporate new broadcast and lighting technologies into their arenas.

"Steve has helped to revolutionize the way in which our fans around the world follow the NBA," deputy commissioner and chief operating officer Adam Silver said in a statement..

iPO Review - mStation 2.1 Stereo Orb

The mStation 2.1 Stereo Orb is a one-piece speaker and docking system for iPods (and other devices). While it looks more or less like a colored bowling ball, it is actually a decent compact stereo system available in seven spiffy colors:

Technically, there are two 2-inch front-facing drivers, a 3-inch rear-facing subwoofer, and a 30 watt (RMS) power amplifier inside the Orb. Its only controls are a set of six buttons in front of the iPod dock. Those buttons are: on/off, volume down, volume up, next/fast forward, previous/rewind, and play/pause.

The included infrared remote control has that same set of buttons plus an additional set of controls for bass and treble.
